When should functional safety become part of the machine design conversation?
Day one.
That’s the perspective of Dean Stark , Applications Engineer at HYDAC USA, and it’s an important distinction for machine designers.
Functional safety isn’t a final checklist, a component selection, or something that can simply be validated into a machine once the design is complete. It starts with understanding the risks, defining how the machine needs to respond, and considering how hydraulics, controls, electronics and software will work together to create predictable machine behavior.
As Dean puts it:
“Functional safety isn’t something you validate at the end of a project. It’s a design philosophy that should guide every engineering decision from day one.”
That systems-level thinking can influence decisions throughout the development process—from architecture and component selection to controls strategy, diagnostics and validation.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing perspectives from HYDAC engineers across multiple disciplines as part of our Engineering Safer Machines series.
Because safer machines aren’t created by one component or one engineer. They’re engineered as a system.

Some people discover their passion over the course of their career. From an early age, Andreas Wächter knew that his was forming technology. For over 25 years, he has been fascinated by creating something new from raw materials. Whether it’s forging, pressing, or wire forming – the ability to shape materials with precision and create innovative products from them continues to inspire him to this day.
In October 2026, Andreas Wächter will take over as sales manager for press & forming machine solutions at HYDAC International. For a long time, he associated HYDAC with values such as reliability, durability and innovative hydraulic products. It was ultimately precisely these qualities that convinced him to join the company.

💬 "Everyone has something that fascinates them. For me, it was and still is forming technology – the ability to create something entirely new from raw materials."

Functional Safety certification demonstrates that HYDAC engineers understand how complete machine systems behave under real-world operating conditions—helping OEMs design equipment that is safer, more reliable, and better integrated from concept through operation.
But certification isn't the entire story—it's proof of the engineering capability behind HYDAC's system-level approach:
• Fluid Power Engineering contributes reliable hydraulic performance.
• Controls & Electronics Engineering monitors and manages machine behavior.
• Application & Systems Engineering integrates these technologies into safe, optimized machine operation.
Functional safety is not only about individual technologies. It is about understanding how those technologies interact. HYDAC’s Functional Safety Certified team members help support a systems-level approach to machine design — connecting hydraulic performance, controls intelligence, electronics, and application knowledge into one integrated engineering view.
In fact, modern machine performance depends on this type of integration.
